Dr. Erez Gilad
I am the head of the Reactor Physics research group at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. I am particularly interested in fundamental core physics, including experimental core physics, neutron transport theory, and in-core fuel management. I am a non-orthodox theoretical physicist with a unique and diverse professional background, which includes pivotal positions in academia, national research laboratories, industry, the private sector, and military.
Currently, my main research efforts include the study of neutronic effects during severe core accidents in Gen-IV fast reactors, the study and development of advanced analysis techniques for zero-power neutronic experiments in critical and subcritical facilities, the development of innovative evolutionary algorithms for core design optimization, and improved transport corrections for the multigroup neutron diffusion equation.
I am a member of the High Scientific Council of the European Nuclear Society (ENS) and ad-hoc reviewer for leading scientific journals and conferences. I also serve as the chair of the Graduate research students committee of the Unit of Nuclear Engineering, teach a variety of graduate and undergraduates courses on core physics and nuclear reactors, and supervise Ph.D and M.Sc students.
I have served as a senior physicist in IRR2, which involved physical core design, fuel cycle calculations and management, design and analysis of neutronic experiments, safety analysis, and safety regulations compliance.
My experience in different scientific disciplines (nonlinear dynamics and chaos, complex networks, theoretical epidemiology, neutron transport, reactor physics) enables the multidisciplinary approach, which I believe is necessary for modern and innovative reactor physics research.
My skills as a theoretical reactor physicist together with hands-on experience in reactor safety and operation constitute a significant advantage in conducting pertinent and applicable reactor physics research.
